Working of an electronic door lock
In traditional door locks, a latch or a lever slides across the opening between the door and the door frame and is placed there by pins in the lock. The lock cylinder has a line of small metal pins that have two portions – an upper and a lower half. The key, when inserted, ensures that these metal pins be moved to a length such that the cylinder can be rotated. This further turns the lock cylinder to unlock or lock the door. This method of working is termed as pin and tumbler method. The cylinder is only able to rotate when the right key is inserted that moves each pin just enough to create a straight separation between the upper and lower halves of the pin.
Modern electronic door lock systems use actuators that connect the bolt or cylinder with a small motor inside the door frame.
